"Luke's Dad Sold His 2000TL To Get a Sienna" (lukielauxd)

My dad loved to show me car movies when I was small and along with my grandpa’s love for James Bond, the one car that I keep remember is super cool is the E38 7-series.
I can imagine them being super unreliable. And I’m but a college student right now and have no idea how to handle my finances in the future, but if the opportunity ever comes up. I want to find a pristine LWB one, preferably 740 but 750 would be interesting too, and just keep it and drive it occasionally while having like a Camry as a usable car.
IT JUST LOOKS SO NICE. An ideal one would HAVE to be a sport. Silver would be like the obvious choice but I’m also tempted to want a black or a special color one (like red or dark green.)

Always has been one of my favorite looking Bimmers. Reminds me of Transporter instead of Bond though.

The 735i is not bad and if you’re in Europe, you can get it with a manual transmission so...

My uncle who now runs my grandfather’s company, rich as all hell, drives that exact car. He says he hates the newer ones. Oh and never get the long ones!!

College student here with beater E38, she’s about to hit 200k soon. Poorly mainted by the previous owners but it keeps on rolling.

They’re not as unreliable as folks with 2nd or 3rd hand knowledge say they are. I have an E39 with over 175k miles and minimal maintenance requirements.
E38s had such a presence to them and ooze class, even today. I’d love a 740iL but man they’re tough to find in a condition worth buying nowadays.

The 4.0L and early 4.4L 740i can also be had with a manual.

Oh ok, my E38 culture is not up to date :)
Though sometimes, after a few hundred kilometers driving my mini in France, I think about trading it for one :)

If you need one for driving long distances, I suggest you get the diesel. ;D

I just had the greatest idea: Mazda Roadpacer AP, with a Turbo. No performance and single digit MPGs for days

It always amazes me these have got such a bad rep over there. If well maintained these can go on for decades. Especially the I6's but you probably didn’t get that one.
Just do it and make us all proud!

My wallet would hate that... One rotary is terrible enough like that gas-wise, not sure I could survive a second one lol.

I always wanted an E39 M5 , basically the same thing as with you an the E38. They’re just so cool. When I graduated college and got a job I began to get serious about buying an M car. I realized that in 2013 the newest E39 would be 10 years old and could require a lot of high dollar repairs to bring it up to the standard I wanted. So it was either spend all the money on a 10 year old car with 100k on the clock or get something a lot newer with a lot less miles. That’s why I got my E90, plus it’s almost a modern E39, 4 door 6MT V8 M car.

They are out there (have not looked at car, no affiliation with seller, YMMV)

Those cars are pretty cheap right now. They’ll be dirt cheap when you’re out of school. Put like $20 aside every month right now and by the time you’re done you’ll have a nice little maintenance fund. If you start researching now how to work on them and problem areas, you can do all the work yourself.

I tried looking for a manual HAHAHA (Ultimate Transporter status.) But I couldn’t find any information on them. I was gonna say hopefully they’ll be 25 years old to import into the US by the time I can get one but it appears even the last ones are 25 years old now.
EDIT: Totally missed it by 10 years. So I have 10 years of time to find the perfect European E38.
